memory is imperfect but the storytelling isn’t
the chambers of the heart isn’t
the pool of blood at my feet isn’t
the being barely there isn’t
colorism isn’t

the memories have no metaphors
there is no comparison
no faded areas, no fog, no filter

no names have been altered
except mine, year after year

the tongue, like stake
the tongue, like fire
the tongue like everyone isn’t supposed to have one
that’s what I was told

this is the telling of what I’ve been told
this is how you use the tongue
